Restoring civic pride

We knew what a special building the Grade II Listed Lambeth town hall was in the local neighbourhood and beyond, and we needed to ensure its future at the heart of the community.

With our partners, we created a civic and community hub fit for the 21st Century. We preserved and enhanced the building’s heritage and original features, creating a unique and distinctive modern workplace and public building which brings pride to its users and the local community. It’s now home to new flexible co-working hub, event spaces and community rooms.

Modern workspace

The restored town hall now meets the council’s ambition, providing a modern, energy efficient workspace which brings out the best in employees while increasing public access and community use. Its refurbishment has transformed a listed Edwardian landmark, bringing it back to its former glory for the benefit of the public.

The town hall now delivers the best possible environment for working, meeting and making decisions, through careful remodelling and reinstatement to create an inviting, open, democratic, flexible and economic building to run, which brings out the best in employees.

Accessible, flexible, sustainable

The town hall is now an accessible and attractive community asset, with a new public courtyard and registry office hosting weddings, the Assembly Hall transformed to provide bookable space for community events, a refurbished council chamber at the heart of local democracy and a flexible workspace for start-ups and small businesses.

Accessibility has been greatly improved with two new scenic lifts installed to provide access to all floors of the historic building, increasing accessibility and inclusivity for all.

Quality is the core of sustainable regeneration

Lambeth town hall had to be exemplar. A welcoming and exciting first impression was created through the provision of an ETFE roof over a reinstated glazed brick atrium, leading to a remodelled flexible reception connecting directly to a new public courtyard.

The town hall had stood at the centre of the community for over a hundred years, and we wanted it to stand for at least a hundred more. We created a unique and distinctive modern public building, which brings pride to its users and the local community by restoring it to the heart of civic life.
