New era for Wythenshawe as £32 million works begin at civic

The transformation of Wythenshawe Town Centre has taken its first visible step forward. Demolition works have begun on the former Peacocks store, paving the way for new community and outdoor spaces funded by £20 million from the UK Government and a further £11.9 million from Manchester City Council.

What’s coming to Wythenshawe Town Centre?

A brand new Culture Hub, food hall, workspace and improvements to outdoor public areas will be included in the works. These exciting new spaces will bring fresh opportunities to the town and make Civic a greener and more welcoming and accessible place for locals and visitors to enjoy and spend time in.

The Culture Hub will provide spaces for eating, meeting and hanging out downstairs, whilst upstairs it will feature creative studios, a cinema room and flexible spaces for community use and workshops, as well as for live music and performances.

The new food hall, which will be located within the three units next to the former Peacocks store will create a vibrant destination for independents and local food vendors, while a modern workspace will support local start-ups and bring new jobs into the town centre.

A new and improved public square, designed for events and gatherings, with new planting and seating will make Civic more inviting and attractive and encourage people to stay in the town later into the evening.

Joel Chandler, Senior Development Manager, said:

We have been consulting with people about what they want to see in Wythenshawe for some time now, so beginning the demolition of the former Peacocks unit is a huge milestone for everyone. Works at Civic will continue at pace from this point as we deliver the project we have promised over the next couple of years. All of the shops and services at Civic will remain open throughout the works, and we’re encouraging local people to stay involved in shaping the wider plans as they progress. ”

Cllr Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said:

“This is a real mile marker moment for Wythenshawe Civic. After some months of setting a vision, taking time to have a proper conversation with local people, and planning we can celebrate the first tangible signs of construction – the first in a long-term plan that will transform the town centre.”

What are the next steps for Wythenshawe Town Centre?

Demolition of Peacocks will complete early next year, with construction of the Culture Hub, food hall, workspaces and new public square also starting in early 2026. All new spaces are expected to open in 2027.
