Renew the North campaign backed by housing partnerships

Ahead of the upcoming Autumn budget, Chairs and Vice Chairs of housing partnerships from across the North have backed a package of measures which have been shaped by the Northern Housing Consortium’s Renew inquiry.

Renew is led by the Northern Housing Consortium and supported by Homes for the North and Muse. The inquiry explores how housing-led regeneration can support growth, help tackle the housing crisis and create thriving communities across the North.

This summer a report was launched which set out how housing-led regeneration could help unlock more than 500,000 good quality homes across the North of England.

It considers reviving struggling high streets with over 100,000 new homes in town and city centres, building 320,000 homes on brownfield land and renewing or replacing 100,000 social homes in need of regeneration.

The report was based on evidence from organisations responsible for around 1 million of the North’s 1.4 million social homes, alongside insight from more than 160 regeneration schemes.

This included examples of our partnership-led regeneration, including Bradford City Village and Salford Central, both being delivered through ECF, our partnership with Homes England and L&G.

Drawing on this research, the Northern Housing Consortium and Homes for the North have been joined by Chairs and Vice Chairs of housing partnerships across the region to back a call for measures which the Government can take to further unlock the potential of housing-led regeneration across the North.

Housing partnerships bring together the social housing sector, including housing associations and local authorities, to work in partnership with Mayoral Strategic Authorities, Homes England, and other stakeholders to deliver growth, better places, and new homes.

Collectively the North’s housing partnerships own or manage 1.1m of the 1.4m social homes in the North.

The signatories to the letter which has been sent to the Chancellor of the Exchequer are calling on the Government to make regeneration a central part of the Autumn Budget, with a series of proposals that would support councils, housing associations and Mayoral Strategic Authorities to overcome barriers to delivering housing-led regeneration in the North.
