We came together with Bury Council and VINCI Building this week with local dignitaries to celebrate a key construction milestone as Prestwich’s £14m new travel hub reached its highest point.

To mark the occasion, guests, including the Leader of Bury Council, Cllr Eamonn O’Brien, placed their handprints in wet concrete at the top of the travel hub, creating a lasting record of the milestone and recognising the progress made to date.

Construction of the new travel hub is on track for completion this year. When finished, the three-storey facility will provide more than 300 parking spaces, accessible bays, electric vehicle charging points and extensive cycle storage. Forming part of the first phase of the wider Prestwich village centre regeneration, it will deliver a modern and sustainable transport solution for the local community.

Hugh Taylor, Senior Project Manager, said:

Today’s ceremony is a celebration of the dedication and teamwork that has driven this project forward. It’s fantastic to see the first phase of the regeneration taking shape. We’re proud to be playing our part in delivering long-term benefits for Prestwich and would like to extend our thanks to the entire project team for their continued commitment in helping us reach this point, and to the local community for their patience throughout this build.”

Cllr Eammon O’Brien, Leader of Bury Council, said:

“Reaching this milestone is a significant moment for Prestwich and marks real progress towards our wider regeneration ambitions. The travel hub will provide essential sustainable transport infrastructure for residents and visitors while laying strong foundations for the transformation of the Longfield Centre into a vibrant village destination. I’d like to thank the local community for their patience and support, as we continue developing the travel hub.”

The travel hub signals the start of the ambitious £100m+ regeneration of Prestwich village centre, which will see the Longfield Centre reimagined as a thriving village destination. Proposals include new shops and cafés, a library, community facilities, a market, new green public spaces and homes, all designed to create a vibrant and welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

The Prestwich regeneration has secured £6.8 million funding from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, to support the delivery of the next phase of the regeneration.
